As was mentioned above, I worked hard to learn the role of Lucia in addition to the soprano ensemble part. Learning the role of Lucia completely as an understudy gave me a look into a new-to-me musical style by Donizetti. At first I thought the happy sounding music conradicted the very dark themes of the opera. Through working closely with coaches and directors, I gained greater knowledge of the history and inspirations behind Donizetti's composition style. I learned to find the drama and tragedy in his music. I admire the two women, Andrea Church Briscoe and Louise Frazier, who played Lucia and hope to perform the role one day.
