“As Olympia, Linnea Mott was simply unbelievable! Her robotic doll physicalization, combined with her glorious vocal traits showed a level of artistic union seldom seen in a singer so young. She is a performer with unlimited potential, and a high caliber musician!”
- Dr. Isaac Hurtado, director of opera at Utah Valley University
During the final year of my undergraduate degree at Utah Valley University, I performed the role of the animatronic doll, Olympia in Tales of Hoffman by Jacques Offenbach. It is fair to say that this has been my favorite role I've performed so far. Olympia offered the unique challenge of keeping my body relaxed enough to sing with proper coloratura technique while simultaneously remaining rigid enough to look as much like a doll as possible. After the performnace, multiple people approached me, surprised that I was in-fact a human, and not an animatronic doll. I must give credit where it is due, and that is to my professor, Dr. Anthony Buck who worked to help me obtain greater body autonomy, and to implement action choices that were helpful for my technique rather than detrimental and energy-zapping.
